# Turnkey gun stock production for OEMs: from walnut blank to finished stock

Turnkey gun stock production means **one manufacturer takes a stock from raw walnut blank to finished, packed product**, handling selection, drying, machining, finishing and quality control to the OEM's drawing. For an OEM, it replaces several suppliers with **a single partner accountable for repeatability**, from the first sample to the last batch.

This guide follows the five stages of gun stock OEM production and sets out what a brand should specify at each one. Why work with Minelli Group on a gun stock project? **One partner follows it from design and engineering through production, warehousing and logistics**. **For 90 years** we have worked wood on an industrial scale, also together with other materials. ## From blank to finished stock: how we run the five stages

| Stage | What happens | What the OEM should specify |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **1. Selection and grading** | Walnut is selected and graded for figure, grain direction and defects. | Species, grade, figure level and acceptable variation. |
| **2. Drying and conditioning** | Kiln drying and conditioning bring the wood to a controlled moisture content. | Target moisture content and how it is checked. |
| **3. Machining and shaping** | Each blank is profiled and machined to the OEM's drawing with repeatable processes. | Drawing, interface dimensions, tolerances and prototype approval. |
| **4. Sanding and finishing** | Surfaces are sanded and finished with oil, lacquer or another system. | Finish type, colour, sheen and durability requirements. |
| **5. Quality control and packing** | Every batch is inspected against the drawing and packed for shipping. | Inspection criteria, sampling plan, packaging and logistics. |

## Stage 1: how we select and grade walnut

Walnut is the traditional wood for stocks, and its figure and workability are why it stays popular. For an OEM, the challenge is consistency. It starts with a shared definition of quality, so **we agree the grade with the OEM in writing**, supported by reference samples that show the accepted range of figure, colour and grain. Grain direction also matters for strength, especially in thin sections of the stock.

## Stage 2: how we dry and condition the wood

Moisture is the first technical control. [NRA Family](https://nrafamily.org/content/how-it-s-made-wooden-gunstocks) notes that **up to 40% of the weight** of a newly cut blank is water, and that it must be reduced to **around 10 to 12%** before the blank is made into a stock. Kiln drying is a two-stage process.

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that [wood moisture content tends to reach equilibrium with the surrounding air](https://research.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/62261), and that wood fabricated at a moisture content matching its service conditions avoids significant dimensional change. **A stock that moves after machining can change how it fits the OEM's hardware**, which is why drying and conditioning come before any shaping.

## Stage 3: how we machine and shape to your drawing

Shaping can be done by hand, with machine tools or with a combination of both. In OEM production, **our machine processes deliver the repeatability** that a brand needs across thousands of pieces, while skilled operators handle the details that machines cannot judge.

The interface surfaces are machined to the OEM's drawing and tolerances, and **a prototype is approved before production starts**. ## Stage 4: how we sand and finish

Stock finishes fall into **three families: oil, varnish or lacquer, and synthetics** such as polyurethane. Hand-rubbed oil finishes are beautiful, but each coat must be applied, dried and smoothed by hand, which is slow at production scale.

We ask the OEM to define colour, sheen and durability requirements, and to approve a finished sample before production.

## Stage 5: how we handle quality control, packing and logistics

A good stock is only valuable to an OEM if **the hundredth and the thousandth look and fit like the first**. Each batch is inspected against the drawing, and we agree the sampling plan with the OEM in advance. ## Beyond solid walnut

Solid walnut is not the only option. Maple and birch are also used, and laminated constructions offer stability and cost advantages.

## The problems we solve for OEMs

Behind most gun stock projects are the same four supply chain problems. This is how we solve them:

- **Coordinating multiple suppliers:** one contact and one party accountable for wood, machining, finishing and logistics.
- **Quality variability:** constant tolerances, batch after batch.
- **Forecast management:** we plan capacity and stock levels around your forecasts, with warehousing and logistics handled by the same partner.
- **Supply continuity:** Zogno and Gottolengo are two perfectly interchangeable plants within our network of five production facilities across Europe and the United States. If one is affected by a natural disaster or any other problem, such as a fire, production continues in the other. This meets the recovery plans that multinational OEMs require and avoids production stops.

## What our certifications mean for you

Certifications make our commitments verifiable, and we report on them every year in our [sustainability report](https://www.minelligroup.com/about-us/sustainability/). They give you documented answers to the questions your own audits will ask:

- **FSC** ([Forest Stewardship Council](https://fsc.org/en/how-fsc-works)): an international certification system for wood. Forest management certification confirms that a forest is managed responsibly, and chain of custody certification tracks the certified material through processing, manufacturing and distribution, so you can document the origin of the walnut in your stocks.
- **PEFC** (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification): another international forest certification scheme, with a similar purpose, which documents that wood comes from sustainably managed forests.
- **ISO 45001:2023:** the international standard for occupational health and safety management, which governs how we protect the people who work in our plants.
- **ISO 28000:2022:** the international standard for supply chain security management, which governs how we manage security risks along the supply chain.

## What we need from you to start

To start a project we need **a drawing or CAD model** with interface dimensions and tolerances, the species and grade, the finish and colour, the expected volumes, and the target markets with their export and regulatory requirements. With these, we plan prototypes, tooling and a production schedule for the first batch.
