Eco-friendly cosmetic jar: solutions for luxury skincare brands

Written by Corrado Fioroni | October 17 2025

Did you know that the way your product is presented on the market can influence how customers perceive the formula inside?

A cosmetic jar is the first element of the brand's story.

An eco-friendly cosmetic jar is a great way to communicate a lot of messages about your brand. You can use it to show that your brand is environmentally conscious, that it uses materials with a low impact on the planet and that attention to detail is a priority.

This is where the eco-friendly cosmetic jar becomes strategic. By combining premium aesthetics with sustainable materials such as FSC®-certified wood, cork, or bio-based composites, brands can offer luxury and responsibility in one.

Read on to find out why eco-friendly cosmetic jars are redefining skincare packaging, how wood can enhance both the perception and performance of a product, and how brands can transform a simple jar into a powerful brand statement.

Why are eco-friendly cosmetic jars reshaping the beauty industry?

The way skincare products are packaged is changing quickly. The cosmetic jar, once considered merely a container, has become a key part of the product experience.

Market data confirms this evolution: valued at $4.7 billion in 2024, the market for cosmetic jars is projected to reach $7.3 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 4.7% (Global Market Insights). This growth is fuelled not only by rising skincare demand, but also by the expectations of more environmentally conscious consumers.

Today’s customers are looking for two things: perceived quality and genuine responsibility. That's why we see a rapid move towards eco-friendly cosmetic jars. Manufacturers craft these jars from glass, aluminium, recycled PET or biodegradable composites and increasingly design them as refillable and reusable systems.

What makes a cosmetic jar eco-friendly?

An eco-friendly cosmetic jar is never defined by just one feature. It is the result of conscious design choices that balance sustainability, quality and brand narrative.

We can say that the following things make a cosmetic jar good for the environment:

  • Renewable and certified materials: using FSC®-certified wood, cork or innovative biopolymers for closures and details reduces reliance on virgin plastics and adds natural tactility to the experience.
  • Circular design: refill systems, separable components and monomaterial structures make it easier to reuse or recycle, extending the life of your packaging;
  • Local and traceable production: a shorter, transparent supply chain limits environmental impact while ensuring control and reliability;
  • Durability as luxury: a jar that feels solid and lasts longer not only reduces waste but also elevates the perception of value. The weight of a cap, the smoothness of a closure, the finish of the surface: these are the gestures that customers associate with prestige.

How to choose the right eco-friendly jar for your brand

Selecting the right cosmetic jar is a strategic decision that influences how customers perceive and remember your product. Psychology tells us that decisions are often made based on first impressions (the Halo Effect): when a jar looks and feels premium, the formula inside is immediately perceived as being of a higher quality.

When selecting an eco-friendly cosmetic jar, consider the following three principles:

  1. Align the design with your brand positioning. Minimalist silhouettes and natural finishes communicate authenticity, while sculptural shapes and lacquered effects project prestige. The geometry of your jar should reflect the values you want customers to associate with your skincare range;
  2. Consider the ergonomics and user experience. A closure that opens smoothly, a cap that feels solid in the hand and a stable base are all tactile details that create trust and satisfaction, turning the packaging into part of the ritual;
  3. Make sustainability a driver of identity. Eco-friendly choices are not just a compliance requirement, but a marketing advantage. Consumers reward brands that integrate responsibility seamlessly into their designs without compromising on aesthetics or luxury. Visible sustainability credentials, refill systems and certified wood accents can all reinforce your brand's credibility.

Case study: REVERRE by Bormioli Luigi

The REVERRE project, developed in collaboration with Bormioli Luigi, is one of the most representative examples of how mPackting, Minelli Group’s division specialising in eco-friendly cosmetic packaging, approaches jar design.

Shown here: the mBlack™ version of the “Reverre” jar, created in collaboration with Bormioli Luigi

For this concept launch, mPackting created a series of lids designed to complement Bormioli Luigi’s refillable jars.Two distinct material solutions were engineered to reflect sustainability and brand identity.

The first is the asymmetric ash wood lid, which has a custom, cusp-like shape with carefully reduced thicknesses to ensure elegance and performance while using FSC®-certified wood.

The mBlack® lid is a bio-based, biodegradable composite certified OK Biobased and OK Biodegradable by TÜV Austria. The lid was optimised for biodegradability through reduced wall thickness and material efficiency.

To reinforce the brand identity, each lid was embossed with the REVERRE logo to create a tactile and visual detail.

This case study demonstrates how eco-friendly cosmetic jar lids can serve as a strategic point of differentiation by combining technical expertise, certified materials and bespoke design to meet the growing demand for sustainable premium skincare products.

The future of eco-friendly cosmetic jars

Eco-friendly cosmetic jars are becoming the new standard for beauty brands that want to balance luxury, responsibility and consumer expectations. Every detail, from the material of the lid to the tactile feel of the closure, influences how a product is perceived and valued.

At Minelli Wood, we combine decades of craftsmanship with the innovation of our mPackting division, which is dedicated to providing the beauty industry with sustainable primary packaging. Using FSC®-certified wood, biopolymers such as mBlack® and precision-engineered systems like WoodPin™ and WoodRing™, we help brands to design packaging that performs well, conveys the right message and lasts.
