A complete guide to FSC® Certified Wood

Posted by Edoardo Cavagnetto on September 17 2025 - Reading time: 4 minutes

Every high-quality wooden product starts with a decision about materials. While design defines form and function, it’s the raw material, its origin and its intrinsic value that determine a product's true quality.

FSC®-certified wood guarantees traceability, ecological balance, and responsible sourcing. For brands that care about ethics and aesthetics, FSC® certification is the standard that aligns design integrity with environmental commitment.

In this guide, we'll explain what FSC® certification means, how it works and why it matters, especially when your products reflect your brand's values.

What is FSC-certified wood?

FSC-certified wood comes from forests that are managed according to the standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), an international nonprofit organization that promotes environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management.

But what does FSC-certified wood really mean? FSC certification ensures that the entire supply chain, from forest to finished product, adheres to strict sustainability criteria. These criteria involve protecting biodiversity, respecting the rights of workers and local communities and ensuring long-term forest regeneration.

Unlike non-certified wood, which may come from uncontrolled or illegal sources, FSC wood is traceable and verified through independent audits. As a result, brands and consumers can confidently choose products that align with sustainability and ethical sourcing principles.

There are three main types of FSC certification:

  • FSC 100%: products made entirely from wood sourced from FSC-certified forests;
  • FSC Mix: products made from a combination of FSC-certified wood, recycled material and/or controlled sources;
  • FSC Recycled: products made exclusively from reclaimed or recycled wood reduce the need for virgin material and help close the loop.

If your company works with wooden components, using FSC-certified wood will enhance your credibility, reinforce your commitment to transparency and add long-term value to your brand.

The importance of FSC Certification

Opting for FSC certification is a deliberate choice that reflects your company's perspective on the world and its future.

From an environmental standpoint, FSC certification guarantees that wood originates from responsibly managed forests, which preserve biodiversity, protect endangered species and maintain the ecological balance of forest ecosystems. It also means minimizing waste and reducing deforestation.

On a social level, FSC standards guarantee ethical practices throughout the entire supply chain. Such practices guarantee fair wages, safe working conditions and respect for the rights of workers and indigenous communities living in or near certified forests.

From a business perspective, FSC certification adds value to your brand. Today’s consumers and business-to-business (B2B) buyers are increasingly aware of sustainability issues. Using certified wood enhances your reputation, demonstrates transparent sourcing and positions your products as premium, ethical and forward-thinking.

FSC Certification and compliance: what to look for

Not all sustainability claims are equal. To ensure that your partners are truly responsible, it's essential to understand how FSC certification works in practice and how to verify it.

The first step is to request the supplier’s FSC license code. This unique alphanumeric code can be verified in the official FSC database. Avoid generic references to certification: a valid code indicates that the supplier is actively monitored and audited.

Ensure that all documents, such as invoices and packing lists, include a specific FSC claim, such as FSC 100%, FSC Mix, or FSC Recycled.

Look for traceability practices: certified suppliers must implement a robust chain of custody that documents every step of the wood’s journey, from forest to final product. FSC traceability codes link the finished component back to its certified source.

Lastly, remember that a company can be FSC-certified even if it has not certified all its products. If the claim isn’t clearly stated, the product isn’t certified.
