Perfume packaging can now become 100% sustainable with a revolutionary wooden cap that doesn’t need plastic, glue, or resin.
Here’s how this new and special object was created.
Perfume packaging: the newest solution to make it totally green
In this article, we talked about threaded wooden caps that make cosmetic packaging 100% sustainable.
But what about perfume packaging?
Wooden caps for perfumes usually need an internal plastic capsule to ensure perfect closing, but this does not make them 100% sustainable. It means they don’t satisfy the increasing demand for green packaging, and you risk not being competitive by offering them in your catalogue.
Sustainability is one of the main trends that are shaping today’s industries, and the fragrances sector is no exception.
The perfume industry is booming with the global perfume market valued at $30.6 billion in 2021 and projected to grow to $43.2 billion in 2028 according to a report from the market research firm Fortune Business Insights.
So as industry watchers refer to so-called “eco-friendly” fragrances as an emerging trend particularly among Gen Z and millennial consumers who are drawn to nontoxic products good for the environment, offering sustainable packaging is likely to be a successful strategy.
Besides organic and natural ingredients, in fact, brands and companies look for eco-friendly perfume packaging that mixes sustainability and elegance to attract buyers’ attention.
That is why we created Legnapin, the most sustainable caps for perfumes
Legnapin represents a revolution in the fragrance industry, as the plastic part and the associated glue—once fundamental to ensure perfect closing—can be definitely removed.
How did Minelli do that?
Have a look at the video below:
As you saw, Legnapin is a wooden cap in which the plastic capsule is replaced by one or three food-contact cork cylinders that create strong friction with the collar of the pump (spray or dispenser) thus guaranteeing perfect closing without using any:
- plastics
- resins
- glues
It is a universal solution, as cork spurs can be inserted into any type of wooden cap—even with different diameters—without making any modification or creating a new mould.
On the contrary, when using internal plastic or resin-based capsules, you need a new mould if the diameter of the cap changes.
Why did we choose cork?
Cork is made from the bark of the cork oak, which is most common in Mediterranean areas. Contrary to what many people think, its extraction process does not cause any problems for the plant. In fact, the bark grows back in a completely natural way before being extracted again after about nine to ten years.
It is, therefore, an extraordinarily green material that carries many advantages and benefits. It is used, for example, in the insulation of buildings thanks to its thermal-acoustic insulation properties.
But that’s not all. Cork is 100% renewable and recyclable, breathable, antistatic, extremely light, elastic, hypoallergenic, waterproof, fireproof, and mildewproof.
These are all characteristics that make it particularly versatile and suitable for different contexts and uses.
Combining cork with wood to create components for perfume packaging lets you offer products that are:
- monomaterial and 100% sustainable—as cork is comparable to wood and doesn’t need to be separated when thrown away
- plastic free—responding to the needs of consumers who want to buy more eco-friendly items
- unique and innovative—something that nobody has done before and can let you gain a competitive edge in the market
The competency and reliability of the wood maker are essential
Creating unique and cutting-edge products presupposes deep research, creation of prototypes, sometimes unsuccessful attempts, and continuous experimentation that ultimately lead to achieving the desired result.
Having ad hoc machinery and technology is a key support in creating functional and aesthetically beautiful products.
This is why the role of the wood maker is central.
The manufacturer must have perfect knowledge of the raw material and know how to treat it in the best way to create a valuable and top-quality product.
Moreover, you must ensure it employs sustainable practices during the production process and uses only FSC/PEFC-certified wood to create its objects.
Producing perfume packaging made of wood doesn’t mean offering sustainable products.
A manufacturing company must meet very stringent criteria in terms of safeguarding the environment and protecting our planet’s resources to be considered eco-friendly.
At Minelli, we always try to create distinctive wooden products with unique finishes, collaborating with clients to satisfy their requests. Innovation and a deep respect of the raw material are our most important prerequisites.
Thanks to our decennial experience in wood manufacturing and our internal R&D department, we constantly develop new ideas, processes, styles, and techniques to make glamorous, beautiful, and functional objects.
Moreover, in 1999, we were among the first to be certified by the FSC when it was not yet a standard. Today, we are also PEFC certified.
