Let’s discover them in the following article!

Cosmetics packaging: what does sustainability mean?

People today are increasingly aware of environmental issues and climate change, and they prefer buying products that have a negative effect on the planet.

Brands and companies look for manufacturers that can supply eco-friendly items that are functional and aesthetically appealing too.

Many people believe that choosing wooden packaging (or packaging made of other sustainable materials) is enough to consider the product 100% sustainable.

But there are two problems with this belief:

  • when you think about sustainable cosmetic packaging, you don’t have to consider just the bottle, as the cap must be sustainable, too, and this is often not the case
  • if the wood manufacturing process isn’t sustainable, neither can the products be considered sustainable

Let’s analyze these two points.

Are you sure the wood cap for cosmetics packaging is eco-friendly?

Even if they are made of wood, most caps for cosmetics need an internal plastic threaded capsule to ensure perfect closing. Moreover, sealing discs—designed to keep cosmetic products off the jar lid—are also usually made of plastic.

It means they are not completely sustainable.

The idea of creating 100% sustainable threaded wooden caps for packaging combined with cork-sealing discs arose from this need.

Threaded wooden caps have always existed, but as mentioned before, they have not been completely eco-friendly. They also wear over time, which leads to losing their smooth hermetic closure.

We have created a threaded wooden cap that ensures perfect closing without needing the internal plastic part and the associated glue, which results in a completely eco-friendly object.

Combining threaded wooden caps with a cork-sealing disc means offering 100% sustainable packaging for cosmetics and ensuring maximum functionality and performance.

Discs made of cork exploit the natural compressibility of the raw material to seal the lid and avoid product leakage without using plastic, glue, or resin.

But what distinguishes a standard threaded wooden cap from Minelli’s cap?

Look at the picture below:

A regular thread starts at zero level tangentially to the edge of the cap and then rises progressively until it reaches its maximum section height. Since wood is a “soft” material, such structure is not resistant.

Minelli’s wooden thread starts at its maximum section height right from the beginning, so it is much more resistant and durable; such thread will maintain its functionality even when frequently screwed and unscrewed and protects the product from contamination and leakage.

In case a sealing gasket has to be present, it can be completely removed, as we include a specific undercut in the internal cap design.

What does sustainable wood manufacturing mean?

In wood manufacturing, sustainable production means providing environmental protection along with economic and social benefits to always ensure growth of a business.

It means that wood, its collection process, and actual processing must be sustainable to guarantee a 100% eco-friendly product.

If you want to offer in your catalogue a sustainable product, you must ensure that the wood manufacturing company uses timber sourced responsibly: PEFC and FSC certification ensures that the raw material derives from well-managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits to local communities.

However, wood must also be managed responsibly. The wood maker must follow strict environmental protection practices and should:

  • work to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions while producing wooden components where raw material is collected; shortening the process that raw materials go through to reach production makes transportation logistics more sustainable
  • follow a circular economy model, recycling and reusing resources and discarded materials to produce smaller items, fuel heating systems, and heat drying chambers
  • use energy-efficient implants and monitor energy consumption while conducting audits to evaluate the company’s energy usage and increase its efficiency
  • prefer organic water-based lacquers created with ingredients derived from recycled materials and renewable sources, e.g., water and organic resin, with a very low content of VOC (volatile organic compound). The production process of these lacquers has lower impact on the environment compared with petroleum products

Since 1937, Minelli S.p.A. has designed, developed, and manufactured premium custom-made wooden components and products for many different brands and markets, and the quality of its objects is recognized all over the world.

In 1999, we were among the first to be certified by the FSC when it was not yet a standard. Today, we are also PEFC certified.

We were pioneers in introducing and patenting a completely eco-friendly threaded cap without plastic or glue that we called Legnavis. We are very proud of this completely sustainable, elegant, and customizable solution.
